In fact, there are small moments that really do pull that off if you're the kind of person who has no qualms with changing a story inside your head. I've mostly lost interest in racing games - I dropped F1 2021 almost immediately after finishing the story mode, I hated FH5 with a passion and dislike cars too much to have any interest in games like GT7, so something that brings back my old GRID memories would be great on paper and instantly be better than those games for me personally. The story is really the thing I'm saddest about. 7/10 in an era where 7 usually means "don't buy this unless it goes on a deep discount" perfectly describes this game. While racing is the fundamental part of the game, the story incorporates real-life cutscenes featuring various actors. It still has something to offer, mainly the nostalgia factor because the story mode is genuinely good if you can get into it, but the game is barely worth a quarter of the price. GRID Legends has a unique, documentary-style story mode called Driven to Glory. The same goes for the career mode being all breadth and zero depth, the handling being a right mess in more ways than one can imagine, the AI being painfully reliant on gamebreaking mechanics like slipstreaming to be in any way competitive and the innumerable weird bugs and other signs that they did very little testing for this game. The story being either boring or rage-inducing depending on how much you care about it is still factual. 50 hours in, done with the story and even the regular career mode so I'm pretty much ready to drop the game.
